Twitter is heavily centered around the use of the # (hash tag) symbol and it will display popular trends on Twitter. The # symbol almost symbolizes a reference. If you post a phrase with a hash tag in front of it, it will link you to a feed where there are posts with the same #hash tag as well. The hash tag symbol has also been used outside of twitter heavily and many people use it as almost as a smaller search engine for relevant posts.
Every use can have the option to have followers. Once you have other twitter users following you, they will also receive your updates along with the hash tags you mentioned. You can also follow others and receive their updates as well. You can also tweet something that is public but type @ and mention that specific person so they can directly see you tweet.
On the twitter main page, users and paid advertises can post videos aside from pictures and messages. Twitter allows you to import your contacts from Google so you can turn them into followers. Twitter also gives you the option to search twitter for past posts.
